It's a Very Different World Again

"Between all this Presidential blow-job cover-up nonsense and the bombing of terrorists (us & them, here and abroad), our world is again a very different place. Privacy doesn't exist. Peace does not exist. We've fooled ourselves to believe that they both exist. Our culture stagnates while cigar bars flourish. How did we become so deluded? Well, times have been good. Money is in the bank. Porsche sales are at an all time high.

Well, believe me, there are more desperate poor in America today than at any other time. There are more people in prison in America than at any other time. The good old USofA has more internal and external enemies than at any other time. But times are good, remember?

This is a country for the young and the rich. If you are not either, you are nothing. If you are both, you're fat and happy (Americans are the fattest beasts on the planet). Why are we so consumed with Presidential fellatio? Why does the TV news compete to dictate what is important? We've forgotten what's important...because times have been so good. Individuals have grown selfish and narrow. The American economy is strong and the rich and the young are in control. Have you watched network television or listened to commercial radio lately? We live in happy-talk times, folks. We're dim to the ills of our own old and poor and we are completely blind to the relevant issues of the world. We're over-sensationalized ourselves into a coma.

History predicts change.

For those who keep our eyes open and our ears to the ground, it's in the air. Things change. Someone has to take advantage."

Autumn is tKoL

"Smell that? That's the cool, clear, clean continental arctic air coming down out of Canada. Unlike its moist, hazy tropical brother, the Autumn air means serious business. Time to prepare. Time to survive. The autumn air means tKoL.

The autumn is about creating. Our best work occurs in the fall, both conceptually and output. The senses are clearer and the world is calmer. The contrasts are high and greatly appreciated. We steamroll out of summer. Autumn is tKoL."

The Afrodavid Thinktank - 2001

The Afrodavid Thanktank was posted to Yahoo!'s Geocities back in 2001. Well Yahoo! is scraping Geocities. That means that The Afrodavid Thanktank will be scraped. Also scraped will be the original the Kingdom of Leisure site. Oh well.

The Afrodavid Thanktank Web site contained images created between 1998 and 2001. Click to view selected Afrodavid imagery. Hopefully Yahoo! won't scrape Flickr anytime soon or we'll have to do this whole exercise again.

It Just Showed Up On My Doorstep

So I opened my front door and a white kitchen garbage bag is wedged between my door and storm door. I looked around and then opened the bag. Huh?!

In the bag is a brand new black and red Targus laptop backpack. No note. No information. Okay...a new backpack. Uh...thanks? So again someone has left something for me on my doorstep [clicky], or at least I believe it's for me.

Creepy? You bet.

The question becomes not who is giving me stuff, but why aren't you giving me stuff? I'm just that cheap.

Artist Statement

An artist must live with their antennae constantly alert for the perturbations of ideas, movements and events most likely to change the facts of our lives --- and then respond fully, with vital authenticity at the core primal level, with a fearlessness and openness that risks total vulnerability, in order to assert and celebrate our humanity in the times we live.

In my interactive artwork, I portray this interdependence of individuals with their environments and with each other through bodily interactions. Many of my works do not function unless viewers actively engage with them—by touching, breathing, moving, etc.—so that viewers are essential to the work’s existence as art.

One day, while photographing on the streets of Isfahan, Iran, I spotted a young Persian man wearing a Dixie Chicks t-shirt. I introduced myself, and I inquired whether his t-shirt was intended to signify his dislike for the American President Bush. He smiled, and told me that the shirt represented the admiration that he and his compatriots had for Americans' freedom of speech.

Art is a sensuous expression of the yearning for the unattainable
- A non-existent bridge between the base and the sublime
- Such as the violets’ scent
I have also drawn a great deal of inspiration from being involved in cowboying ventures and ranch associations. That background alone would be enough to fill ones subject search, however lately I have broadened my subject matter to include miscellaneous.

The very beginning of my art career had an interesting start. First, I don’t recall ever painting or drawing at all as a child. When I first began college I was a Psychology/Sociology major, intent on saving the world. Early on I took a Painting course, just to fill a requirement. At that time, my ego was small (having just gone through a divorce) and my instructor was very encouraging about the quality of my first painting. Needless to say, I needed this positive feedback, so I started eating, sleeping and breathing Fine Art. That was nearly 30 years ago.

Life is an ongoing process and so is my work. I’m never afraid to try a new technique, a new clay and I’m never so in love with the last project that I won’t push the limit on the next project.

People ask me why I make quilts, followed immediately by the statement that they "don't have the patience." Creating quilts has nothing at all to do with patience - it is as necessary to me as breathing. I don't even particularly care what happens to them after they are completed - it is the process that drives me.

As an artist, I see my job as translating ordinary images into a form that is distinctive, creative, and unique. I photograph most of my subject matter and then rework these images, simplifying them into bold and graphic forms using combinations of color that strive to create a drama and vibrancy in the painting. I will sometimes place colors side by side that are not traditionally put together. For example, I will use red, mauve and orange together.

It is my goal to create works with meaning and energy, texture and history. I employ processes of making art that contribute to those qualities in my work. I like the bareness and immediacy of drawing, the “delicacy and mutability” of paper, as I throw myself wholeheartedly into expressing that which is on my mind and in my heart. A further concern was also using this body of work to explore the integration of figurative and abstract modes of thinking, drawing and painting, and to push the boundaries therein.

My work is centered around the experience of being in the city. There is no particular aspect of the city that I concentrate on. The people and the urban landscape are equally of interest to me.

Water Colors and drawing allow a wide range of type of artwork, both detailed and loose. I enjoy doing both. My interests lie in the automotive field and I also enjoy Southwestern landscapes and images from the West as well as Midwestern scenes. Consequently my work is comprised of loose and flowing paintings of pottery, cliff dwellings and old barns as well as very detailed automotive renderings and paintings. This is very fulfilling, as it lets me work in different modes. I feel one benefits the other.

Some 30 years ago I jotted this in my journal and it is still true today:
Some may call it dirt
Some dismiss it - mud
No matter what you call it
Clay is in my blood
Yes, clay is in my blood

Quit Frontin': You Do Not Have To Drive Like That

Nee-grow please! Pull your seat up into something approaching a feasible and reasonable and seated car driving position. I'm not talking about a proper driving position nor do I speak of even a safe driving position. I'm only talking about a driving position that allows you to drive a motherfucking car.

What?

I was rolling shotty in my homie Ross-Rone's Caddy (modified CTS-V, check that) the other day and I had to do a double take when I peeped into the car next to us. We were on the freeway but there was mad traffic b/c of an accident that blocked some lanes.

I didn't see a driver in the car next to us! It appeared as is if we were driving next to some kind of futuristic self-driving car from The Jetsons or Sleeper or some shit. It looked like three passengers riding in a car without a fucking driver at all! It looked like some people were chilling in their living room around a hookah or something. I was surprised. I had to look again and more closely.

So I looked again and more closely and noticed that the driver was basically laying down. In a car. The driver! My mind went crazy for a sec. And he was totally serious too. He wasn't fishing his phone from his front pocket or anything. I didn't think you could drive with a body cast. But that was how he decided to drive a motherfucking car today. His seat had to have been fully reclined. Like I said, he was totally serious; looked all "hard' and shit. But, and get this, his posse was totally fine with it too. This is how they rode in a car today...with the driver in a sleeping position and it was cool.

You cannot drive a car lying down. I swear you can't. You cannot see over the dash or hood. You cannot see the road ahead of you. You cannot even reach the fucking steering wheel and the pedals at the same time unless you're very tall like Manute Bol. And you know what? It does not look cool--at all. It is not Keeping It Real. It is not an easier way to drive a car. It looks totally foolish and it has to be very hard work to just drive the thing with any control at all but I wouldn't know because I would never drive a motherfucking car like that. Not because I'm cooler experiential either. No. It simply does not work. I am not a gibbon. My arm length has limits. I don't want to die in a car wreck because I love living a life that is not dead.

You can save your ghetto acrobatics for hat wearing or basketball shoes but drive like you kind of mean it. Drive like you're headed to KFC or someone promised you head and refer. Drive serious!

I swear, I'm not one of those PC "baby on board" hippies but I swear because fools like you are driving motherfucking cars on the freeway, my life is in danger.

How is it cool to drive while lying down? Answer me that. Quit frontin'!
