Man killed in wood-chipper accident

The Anaheim resident was working with a tree-trimming crew in Tustin. He was throwing branches into the machine one moment, authorities say, and then suddenly 'he was gone.'

Authorities in Orange County are working to recover the remains of a 24-year-old Anaheim man who was killed Wednesday in a wood chipper accident in Tustin.

The tree service worker "was standing at the back end of the chipper, throwing branches into it with his co-workers nearby," said Sgt. Pat Welch of the Tustin Police Department.

"One of them looked over, and he was gone."

Authorities took the wood chipper and the truck attached to it to a parking structure at the coroner's office, where they plan to dismantle it.

The accident, which happened about 4 p.m. in the 2600 block of Palmetto Avenue in Tustin, is being investigated by the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health, authorities said.

The man's name was being withheld until his family was notified.

"We'll just be trying to gather as much of the remains as we can," said Supervising Deputy Coroner Larry Esslinger.

Thirty-one people have been killed in wood chipper accidents between 1992 and 2002, according to a 2005 Journal of the American Medical Assn. report.

He's No. 1!

It has taken years of effort and a lot of hard work, but George W. Bush can finally claim "Mission Accomplished": By at least one measure, the president is now more intensely disliked than Richard Nixon ever was.

In a Gallup poll released this week, 50 percent of Americans say they "strongly disapprove" of the job Bush is doing as president. That's the highest strong-disapproval number Gallup has ever seen, besting by two percentage points the 48 percent of Americans who said they "strongly disapproved" of Nixon's job performance in February 1974.

Nixon resigned six months later.

Based on a Gallup chart, it appears that something like 15 percent of Americans still "strongly approve" of Bush's job performance. Roughly twice as many Americans believe in astrology.

The president's horoscope today: "Stick with what you know today -- new people and projects are more trouble than they're worth. That doesn't mean you need to reject them forever, though. Check back in after a few days or more have passed."

Yes, Mr. President, check back in after a few days or more have passed. In the meantime, here's some solace: Gallup says your 50 percent strong-disapproval number is statistically "equivalent" to Nixon's 48 percent, and neither the current Congress nor the current Supreme Court seems inclined to bring things to a head in the way that their counterparts did 33 years ago.

Ty: Good question and an even better observation.

[Answer coming soon--after I actually listen to RNRJ--but the Jay-Z record is really goddamn good. In fact, in my "Records Order So Far" list, it's #3 above Kanye and just below (or tied with) Fiery Furnaces. It's very a close grouping among the top three.

I'll tell you this though, Kid Rock and Jay-Z have both published these records as Business Ventures (and "American Gangster" happens to be very good art too (and I'm NOT talking about the soundtrack). Again, I still have to listen to RNRJ. But, it's not subject of much buzz.]

Oh My God!

So, I walked out to get the mail and noticed that the newest edition of The New Yorker was among the direct mail sent by Jud Ashman.

I actually giggled to myself while flipping through the November 12 issue. No, I wasn't laughing about Jud Ashman's direct mail, I was laughing to myself thinking, "Man! When was the last time Malcolm Gladwell published anything in the magazine?"

So I flipped and...lo and be-fucking-hold right before my eyes was/is an article by Mr. Malcolm "Missing in speaking engagement fees" Gladwell. "Dangerous Minds: Criminal profiling made easy." Page 36.

After I gather my self maybe I'll even read it.

It's like the second coming.
